Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 17, 2007 at the
Stavanger Lutheran Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Lay pastor
Roy Christophersen will officiate. Visitation will be held at the Schmitz
Funeral Home in Ossian from 1 p.m. Sunday until 4 p.m. and again at the church
on Monday one hour prior to services.
Darleen Huether died Thursday, December 13, 2007 at the Ossian
Senior Hospice where she has made her home since November 1, 2006. She was 83
years of age.
Darleen Virginia Huether was born in Winneshiek County, Iowa, on the family farm
southeast of Ossian, the daughter of John G. and Mae L. (Vickse) Amdahl. She was
baptized and confirmed in her faith at the Stavanger Lutheran Church. Darleen
attended the Nesvik School east of her home and graduated from the Ossian High
School. Following her education she moved to Seattle, Washington where she
worked for a telephone company.
On October 17, 1942, Darleen was united in marriage to Alvin Huether at the
Army/Navy YMCA Chapel in Seattle. When Alvin shipped out to sea, she returned
home and lived with her parents in Waterloo, IA. They moved to Ossian in 1954
and lived there the remainder of her life.
Darleen was an active person throughout her life. She played guard on the
basketball team at Ossian High School, which was the only Ossian team to go to
State. She enjoyed raising her children and was a cook at South Winn School for
many years. She had many hobbies, especially cooking/baking and lefsa making,
walking, sewing, getting together with friends and visiting. Darleen was a
member of a Gardening Club. She was an active member of the Stavanger Lutheran
Church and WELCA. She especially enjoyed being with her family.
Darleen is survived by her husband, Alvin “Okie”; one daughter: Vikki (Jerry)
Barness of Ossian, IA; three sons: Louis (Jacque Stratton) Huether of Eden
Prairie, MN, Steven (Nancy) Huether of Huxley, IA, and David (Julie) Huether of
Manchester, IA; twelve grandchildren: Tod (Candy) Huether, Noelle Huether,
Michelle (Terry) Johnson, Scott (Liz) Huether, Kimberly (Greg) Rosauer, Katie
Huether, Matt Huether, Jessica Barness, Brent (Michelle) Barness, Rachel Barness,
Adam Barness and Ben Riggs; six great grandchildren: Hannah Huether, McKenna
Huether, Blake Huether, Kaylee Johnson, Gage Johnson and Stockton Huether; one
brother, Byrdelle (Gwen) Amdahl of Eagan, MN, and one sister, Verna Sand of
Decorah, IA.
Her parents preceded Darleen in death.
