Norbert John Zweibohmer, age 79, of Ossian, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa, following a long illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2008 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, with burial in the Fairview Cemetery in Waterloo, IA at 3:30 p.m. Visitation will be held from 9:30 am till 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Church. Norbert "Red" “Buck” Zweibohmer was born on February 14, 1929 south of Ossian, Iowa. The son of John C. and Justina C. (Klemmer) Zweibohmer. Norbert was baptized in the St. Francis de Sales Church. He received his First Holy Communion and Confirmation in the St. Francis de Sales Church by Msgr. Michael Thiltgen. He attended school at St. Francis de Sales. Norbert was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church in Ossian. On July 18, 1946, he entered the U.S. Army. He served two years, 2 months and 29 days in Tokyo, Japan. On May 6, 1949 he was discharged and returned home. In December 1951, Norbert was united in marriage to Frances (Kehr) Bentz in New Hampton, Iowa. Norbert “Buck” lived in Waterloo, Iowa until his wife’s death in 1994. Norbert then moved to Fort Atkinson, Iowa where he lived in the Fort Atkinson Senior Housing Apartments. Due to health reasons he moved to the Ossian Senior Hospice, Ossian, Iowa in 2001 and was a resident there until his death. Norbert was an over the road trucker for 35 years. He worked for 30 years for Warren Transport of Waterloo, Iowa. He was elected safe driver of the year in 1981. During the trucking years, he trucked to all 48 continental states, Mexico, and six providences in Canada. Norbert was a member of the American Legion Post #0138, Waterloo, Iowa. Norbert was an avid reader and knowledgeable in many subjects. He had great love for Cocker Spaniel Dogs, watching and betting on Iowa football games with his little sister, and watching John Wayne and western movies on television. Norbert "Red" “Buck” was a great friend and advisor to anyone who knew him. He loved getting visits and cards from his nieces and nephews, who always referred to him as “Uncle Buck”. Grand-nieces and nephews came to know him as our “Uncle Buck”. He will be greatly missed. Norbert is survived by his step-son: William (Janelle) Bentz of Waterloo, Iowa; a step grandson: Darrin (Erin) Bentz. three step-great grandchildren: Garret, Ethan, and Saydee Mae Bentz all of Evansdale, Iowa; two sisters: Marie Monroe of Ossian, IA, and Corrine (Ralph) Lensing of Festina, IA; two sisters-in-law: Eunice Zweibohmer of Ossian, IA, and Patricia Zweibohmer. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Norbert “Buck” Zweibohmer was preceded in death by his parents: John and Justina Zweibohmer; his wife: Frances on September 22, 1994; a step-son: Terrence on January 1, 2005; a special friend: Wanda Casper; two sisters: an infant sister; and Marcie Hinders; two brothers: Arthur Zweibohmer and Leonard Zweibohmer; two brothers-in-law: Curtis Monroe and Claus Hinders. |
